President Donald Trump scored a significant legal victory this week in his constant attempt to strip the New York Times and Washington Post of their Pulitzer prices for reporting allegedly between his 2016 campaign and Russia – the coverage he claims was false and slander.
A Florida Court of Appeal on Wednesday opposed the attempt of the Pulitzer Island Board to stop the defamation lawsuit, cleaning the way for the case to continue.
The Board had argued that allowing the litigation to move forward while Trump is serving in office would arouse constitutional concern, but the court rejected that request, saying that only the president himself could affirm such privileges.
Trump on Thursday welcomed development as a turning point in his fight against what he called “false, malicious history” for the alleged links between his 2016 campaign and Russia.

The Fourth Court of the District Appeal in Florida issued a seven -page ruling Wednesday denied the Board’s request to stay in the proceedings.
The Board had argued that allowing the matter to continue while Trump serves in office can raise constitutional issues, including concerns under the Supremacy clause and the Constitutional Care clause.
The court certainly rejected that reasoning, deciding that such privileges could not be transferred to Trump’s legal opponents.
“Such privileges are given only to the President, not his judicial opponents,” the court wrote. “Immunities and privileges, by their nature, do not only for the benefit of the individual they are intended for.”
“Allowing this case continue to facilitate the use of President Trump’s state courts as a sword and a shield – allowing him to seek punishment against anyone who chooses in the State Court, while at the same time claiming immunity for himself whenever appropriate,” the Board told the post in a statement.
“The Pulitzer Board is appreciating the next steps and will continue our protection of journalism and the rights of the first change.”
Trump sued the Pulitzer Board in December 2022, accusing him of slandering him when he defended his 2018 decision to give the New York Times and Washington Post the Pulitzer.
The Board appreciated the exits to cover their alleged Russian intervention in the 2016 possible elections and links with the Trump campaign – reporting that Trump has long insisted he was inaccurate and politically motivated.
The coverage prompted years of speculation and investigation, culminating in the investigation of special adviser Robert Mueller, who found no final evidence of cooperation between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.
Despite this, the Pulitzer board stayed near his decision recently in 2022, calling the reporting “deep source” and “mercilessly reported”.
A court court in Florida previously ruled that the public statement of the Board defending the price could qualify as a “mixed action of active thought”, clearing the way to Trump’s slander claims to move forward.
In his latest appeal, the Board mentioned his own use of Trump’s presidential immunity in cases of unrelated defamation – such as the lawsuit filed by former “students” contestant summer Zervos – to argue that he must also be eligible for a stay.
But the Appeal judges said the comparison was wrong, pointing out that Trump is the plaintiff in this case, not the defendant.
“These cases are not in essence similar,” the court wrote. “When an office owner chooses to start litigation, the courts must assume that the owner of the office has already weighed the loads on their official duties.”
Judges also rejected the idea that the involvement of the court would intervene in the Trump presidency, stressing that he voluntarily filed the lawsuit and did not call any personal immunity to avoid participation.
“If the pursuit of this litigation is in his best interest, or in accordance with the responsibilities of his office, it is exclusively within the respondent’s control,” the ruling concluded.
The decision allows Trump’s lawsuit to continue to disclose, potentially forcing the Pulitzer board and media organizations related to internal communications regarding the controversial price.
Trump’s legal team has said he plans to request deposits and documents that could reveal whether the Board ignored suspicions of the accuracy of his honorable reporting.
As the issue moves forward, Trump has adapted the legal battle as part of its wider campaign against the main media, pledge to be held accountable for the “fake news” plugs.
“We are keeping the fake news media responsible for their lies to the American people,” he wrote of social truth. “So we can, together, make America again great!”
